Yarmouth became a destination for business and commerce by location the became a favorite to many travelers because of all it had to offer.
Yarmouth's glorious history has left us with plenty of great homes and architecture gems and one of them is the Lakelawn.
The Lakelawn was built as a mansion for Mr. William Dodge Lovitt in 1936. He was a prominent Yarmouthian who contributed to the prosper and success of Yarmouth.
The mansion was often the focal point of society gatherings and elegant parties and hosted some of the most well planned and executed formal dinners and dances.
The mansion also had hosted many business and political meetings in its day which shaped the rich history of Yarmouth and the business community as well as the companies that were owned by the Lovitt's. Mr. Lovitt had owned many companies as well as a great deal of real estate and many large ships for transport. He also sat on many boards of directors and organizations in town which made his mansion "The Lakelawn" the center of the dinner functions and society elite gatherings.
The Lakelawn mansion was sold to several society families who kept the glamour of the mansion shining with top hat and gown parties and big bands and famous stars performing for the rich and famous of Yarmouth as well as their celebrity guests.
The Lovitts built several larger mansions in the area. The Lakelawn mansion was sold to several society families and was turned into a lodge in the 1920s. The several owners of the mansion kept up its charm and added to its history.
The mansion was moved back from the main street and the motel part was added to it in the 1940's. It was known as the place to be for its high quality food and comfortable elegant rooms. They had maids dressed in maid uniforms and gloves. The Lakelawn was owned by several hotel operating families that kept adding to its history.
Now the Lakelawn is standing tall in Yarmouth and still impressing its guests with the best food in the Cafe and clean comfortable rooms in the motel.
The mansion is still stately and was given a face lift a few years ago without altering any of its historic charm. The Bed and Breakfast rooms are all in the mansion as well as the cafe. The motel wings form a U with the mansion to make the Lakelawn B&B Motel.
